Built with GGG50 ductile iron body and bonnet, stainless steel stem and fasteners, and 100% FBE coating on all internal and external surfaces, the Model 1005 is engineered for reliable isolation in water, wastewater, fire protection, and industrial fluid systems where chemical exposure and environmental durability are key concerns. The RAL 5015 blue finish is more than a visual identifier. It represents the fusion bonded epoxy (FBE) coating standard: a thermosetting epoxy powder electrostatically applied and oven-cured to form a chemically cross-linked polymer barrier molecularly bonded to the ductile iron substrate. At minimum 250 um DFT on every surface — internal bore, external body, flange faces — the coating is individually spark-tested at 3 kV on every valve to guarantee zero pinholes. In chemical environments — chlorinated water, industrial atmospheres, coastal salt spray, aggressive soils — this coating is the engineered defense that protects the valve's structural integrity throughout its design life.

RAL 5015 Blue FBE Coating — The Waterworks Standard

The blue fusion bonded epoxy finish is the internationally recognized coating specification for waterworks gate valves. But the value is not the color — it is the FBE technology behind it: electrostatic powder application for uniform thickness on complex casting geometries; high-temperature oven curing for chemical cross-linking and molecular bonding to the substrate; minimum 250 um DFT on all surfaces; and mandatory 3 kV holiday spark testing on every valve for zero-defect coverage. This coating is chemically resistant to chlorine, chloramine, and water treatment chemicals within the valve's rated service envelope. It does not soften, swell, or degrade over time — unlike conventional liquid epoxy paints that thin at edges and corners, creating the corrosion initiation points that lead to premature valve failure.

Chemical Resistance — Material Selection for Longevity

Chemical resistance is engineered into every material choice: the FBE coating forms a chemically inert thermoset barrier; the GGG50 ductile iron substrate provides inherently better corrosion resistance than gray iron; the stainless steel SS420/SS431 stem is immune to rust in chemically treated environments; EPDM gaskets and seals resist oxidation, ozone, and water treatment chemicals; and the PTFE-impregnated gland packing is chemically inert across the full media range. In an era of increasingly aggressive water treatment — higher chlorine residuals, chloramination, ozone — these material selections directly extend the valve's service life compared to conventional valves with carbon steel internals and basic paint finishes.

Ductile Iron Construction — The Durable Foundation

GGG50 ductile iron (EN-GJS-500-7): 500 MPa tensile strength, 320 MPa yield, minimum 7% elongation. This provides approximately double the strength and seven times the ductility of gray cast iron. The material absorbs water hammer, impact, and pipe stress loads through elastic and plastic deformation — not brittle fracture. For chemical environments, the spheroidal graphite microstructure of ductile iron also provides better inherent corrosion resistance than the interconnected flake graphite of gray iron, which can act as a corrosion pathway through the casting.

Stainless Steel Internals — No Rust, No Seizure

SS420/SS431 stem with precision-rolled trapezoidal threads. A2-70 stainless steel fasteners throughout the bonnet and gland assemblies. Self-lubricating bronze stem nut. In a valve that may sit motionless for years between operations — typical for isolation valves in distribution networks — non-stainless internals can rust and seize. The Model 1005's stainless and bronze internals ensure the valve operates when needed, without forcing, penetrating oil, or replacement.
