The BS 5153 Swing Check Valve Metallic Seat PN16 (Model 2120) is an industrial-duty, metal-to-metal seated non-return valve manufactured to BS 5153 — the definitive British Standard for cast iron check valves. Designed for applications where resilient-seated swing checks reach their limits — higher temperatures, oil-based media, abrasive service, and fire-safety-sensitive installations — the Model 2120 features a GGG50 ductile iron body, gunmetal (bronze) metallic seat ring, ductile iron disc with precision-machined seating face, stainless steel SS304 swing arm and hinge pin, bolted bonnet with EPDM gasket, EN1092 PN10/PN16 flange connections, and 100% FBE coating on all surfaces. Available DN50–DN300. Manufactured by Shandong Huaze Valve Co., Ltd. (ISO 9001, established 1998). Each valve individually tested to BS 5153 / EN 1074 requirements.
BS 5153 is the UK and Commonwealth reference standard for cast iron swing check valves, parallel to BS 5163 for gate valves. It governs materials, dimensions, pressure-temperature ratings, testing, and marking. Specifying a BS 5153 check valve — rather than a generic "cast iron check" — gives consulting engineers, water authorities, and procurement teams the documented assurance of a standardised, tested, and traceable product from a qualified manufacturer.
The seat ring is cast from gunmetal — a high-strength copper-tin-zinc bronze alloy — with a precision-machined seating face. The ductile iron disc mates metal-to-metal against this bronze ring. This metallic seat pair handles conditions that would degrade, swell, or fail EPDM: high-temperature water, oil-based fluids, aggressive water chemistries, and sustained thermal cycling. Gunmetal's natural corrosion resistance in water and neutral oil service provides a lifetime seating surface without the chemical degradation pathways of elastomers.
In continuous-duty industrial environments — 24/7 cooling circuits, process water with suspended solids, return lines carrying moderate abrasives, pump stations with frequent cycling — the metal-to-metal seat eliminates the single most common failure mode of resilient check valves: elastomer seat degradation. The gunmetal ring does not harden with thermal cycles, does not swell in oil, does not tear from debris impact. The ductile iron body (GGG50) absorbs slam and surge loads that crack gray iron. This is a swing check valve designed for applications where "replace it next shutdown" is not an acceptable maintenance philosophy.
BS 5153 defines the complete specification for cast iron check valves: face-to-face dimensions, flange drilling, minimum wall thickness, seat and disc material grades, pressure test procedures, and marking requirements. For engineering consultancies in the UK, Middle East, Africa, and Commonwealth countries that include BS 5153 in their standard specifications and datasheets, the Model 2120 provides direct compliance — no equivalence arguments, no deviation requests, no specification negotiation. This is a BS 5153 valve, built to BS 5153.
EN-GJS-500-7 ductile iron body and bonnet: 500 MPa tensile, 320 MPa yield, minimum 7% elongation. The body bears the full impact of reverse flow slam — and in industrial service, the reverse flow velocity may arrive faster, the inertia may be higher, the momentum stronger. Ductile iron absorbs surge loads through elastic deformation, returning to shape. Gray cast iron — the traditional BS 5153 body material — cracks when stressed beyond its brittle fracture limit. GGG50 provides both the dimensional interchangeability of a cast iron valve and the structural safety of a ductile material.
Swing arm: stainless steel SS304. Hinge pin: stainless steel SS304. Bonnet fasteners: stainless steel A2-70. Every internal component exposed to the service fluid is corrosion-resistant. In a check valve, the hinge is the only moving part — it cycles with every pump start/stop. A corroded hinge binds and prevents closure. The SS304 arm and pin eliminate this failure pathway for the full service life of the valve.
The swing disc, in its fully open position, rotates clear of the flow path. The bore is unobstructed — essentially the same cross-sectional area as the connecting pipe. This delivers the lowest head loss of any check valve type for a given size. In industrial pumped systems where pump energy is a significant operating cost, the difference between a full-bore swing check and a constricted spring-loaded check translates directly to kilowatt-hours and electricity bills over the 20-30 year installed life of the valve.
Fusion bonded epoxy at minimum 250 um DFT, electrostatically applied to every surface — internal flow path, bonnet interior, disc faces, and external body. In industrial pump stations, check valves may sit idle for days, the internal body chamber full of water, the disc in the closed position. Without coating, corrosion tuberculation develops — restricting disc movement, preventing full opening, and eventually seizing the hinge. The FBE coating eliminates this degradation over the full service life.
