The SANS 664 Socket Ends Resilient Seat Gate Valve PN16 NRS (Model 1046) is a push-fit, direct-burial gate valve purpose-manufactured to the South African National Standard SANS 664 for waterworks applications. Designed for in-line installation in ductile iron water mains, the Model 1046 features integral socket ends accepting standard DI pipe spigots, a fully encapsulated EPDM resilient wedge for zero-leakage bidirectional shutoff, non-rising stem for compact buried operation, and GGG50 ductile iron construction with 100% fusion bonded epoxy coating. Available from DN50 to DN300 and individually tested to EN 1074-1/-2 by Shandong Huaze Valve Co., Ltd. (ISO 9001, established 1998).
SANS 664 is the definitive South African National Standard governing the design, manufacture, and testing of gate valves for water supply and wastewater applications. Published by the South African Bureau of Standards (SABS), it is the mandatory reference standard for water board procurement, municipal tender specifications, and consulting engineer designs across South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, and the broader SADC region.
The Model 1046 is manufactured directly to SANS 664 dimensional, material, pressure, and testing requirements — not a DIN or BS valve adapted with an equivalence argument. This means documented, auditable compliance for project submissions, procurement approvals, and SABS certification requirements. Socket geometry, face-to-face dimensions, and stem requirements all conform to the SANS 664 specification.
In South African water distribution practice, the dominant pipe material is ductile iron with push-fit spigot-and-socket joints. Installing a flanged valve in this environment requires flange adaptors — an additional component that adds procurement cost, installation time, and introduces bolted joints that become the first point of external corrosion failure in aggressive soils.
The Model 1046's integral socket ends eliminate the flange adaptor entirely. The pipe spigot pushes directly into the valve socket — a single-step connection that is faster to install, eliminates bolt corrosion at the joint, accommodates minor angular deflection (3-5°) for ground settlement tolerance, and reduces the valve station excavation footprint. For restrained joint requirements, the socket accepts standard mechanical gland and bolt sets. The socket interior is FBE-coated to the same 250 um DFT as the valve body, maintaining corrosion protection across the complete pipe-to-valve interface.
The wedge core is completely encapsulated within a vulcanized EPDM elastomer — a monobloc, seamless design that eliminates the delamination failure mode of bonded rubber facings. This provides bubble-tight bidirectional shutoff at 18 bar seat test pressure. In a water-scarce country where every kilolitre of non-revenue water represents both a financial loss and a resource sustainability failure, the resilient seat's zero-leakage performance at every buried isolation point delivers genuine water conservation impact. EPDM is WRAS-compatible for potable water.
GGG50 ductile iron body and bonnet (EN-GJS-500-7): 500 MPa tensile strength, 320 MPa yield, minimum 7% elongation. This provides double the strength and seven times the crack resistance of gray cast iron. Stainless steel SS420/SS431 stem with rolled threads. Bronze self-lubricating stem nut. Stainless steel A2-70 fasteners throughout. EPDM gaskets and seals. PTFE-impregnated gland packing. 100% FBE coating at 250 um DFT, spark-tested at 3 kV — every surface, every valve. No carbon steel components in contact with the service environment.
The non-rising stem mechanism encloses the stem and nut within the valve body — continuously lubricated, permanently protected from external dust and grit. In Southern African contexts — where valves may be located in remote rural schemes, operated infrequently by mobile maintenance teams, and exposed to dusty semi-arid environments — the NRS design eliminates the external stem maintenance that rising-stem valves require. The valve operates when needed, without pre-lubrication, without freeing a rusted stem, without special tools.
