Functional Comparison Between Globe Valve and Flap Valve

Globe valves and flap valves are widely used in industrial and municipal pipeline systems, but they have completely different functions and working mechanisms.

A globe valve is a manual or automated control valve designed mainly for flow regulation and isolation. It adopts a vertical disc that moves up and down to change the flow area inside the pipeline. Thanks to its curved flow passage, the globe valve can precisely adjust fluid pressure and flow rate. It can be partially opened, making it ideal for working conditions that require frequent flow control. However, its internal structure causes relatively high pressure loss during operation.

In contrast, a flap valve is a passive self-acting valve used for backflow prevention. It has a simple swinging flap that opens by forward fluid pressure and automatically closes to block reverse flow. The flap valve requires no manual operation or actuator. It features straight-through flow, low resistance and excellent sealing performance. Since it cannot adjust flow, it is commonly installed at pump outlets, drainage lines and sewage pipelines to protect mechanical equipment from reverse flow damage.

In summary, the globe valve is used for regulation and shut-off, while the flap valve is applied for one-way flow protection. Engineers need to select suitable valves according to actual pipeline requirements to ensure system stability and safety.
